is America’s fourth-largest city and it is located just over an hour west of
Sour Lake. Space City is home to some of the country’s best barbecue joints. If
you take your Ford out to Houston for a weekend, be sure to check out some of

Beef ribs, brisket, bone-in pork belly, fried
chicken and more come together in Chef Ronnie Killen’s famous smokehouse. Stop
by Killen’s on a Tuesday for the brisket tacos, on a Sunday for the
sought-after fried chicken, or any day for the dry-aged brisket. For dessert,
grab a slice of cake or pie, or try the banana or bread pudding.
Greg Gatlin’s restaurant is known for its
ribs, and they promise not to leave you disappointed; only wanting to come back
for more. Dishes range from St. Louis-style spare ribs and wings to pulled pork
and burgers. Sides include cucumber salad, creamed corn, baked beans, and

side options alone are enough reason to chow down at Jackson Street BBQ. Try
the smoked brisket, German-style sausage, or barbecue chop salad paired with
jalapeno cheddar biscuits or cole slaw. Conclude it on a sweet note with a

Village Creek State
Located in Lumberton, the Village Creek State Park sits within the Big Thicket National Preserve. As such, you can expect to see cypress swamps, yaupon trees, and river birch trees. If you keep your eyes peeled, you may also catch sight of white-tailed deer, snapping turtles, herons, and egrets. You can make the most of your experience here cruising down the 21-mile Village Creek Paddling Trail and stopping at popular swimming or picnicking spots.
Anahuac National Wildlife
The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge is a great place in
Anahuac to go fishing, whether you want to wade in the water or relax on your
boat. You could catch southern flounder or speckled trout and potentially spot
an alligator or bobcat.
Stretching from the Sabine Causeway to the Neches River,
Pleasure Island has lots of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. You
can go sailing or fishing off the island. When you’re not on the water, you can
also play basketball, hike or pitch a tent.

Light Up Vidor – Dec. 1
Nothing kicks off the Holiday season like attending a gorgeous tree lighting ceremony. Families and individuals are invited to attend Eastgate Church’s fourth annual Light Up Vidor. After watching the lighting of the 28-foot Christmas tree, grab something to eat from one of many food trucks, get some Holiday shopping done at one of over 40 vendors, and enjoy a performance by the Vidor ISD Wind Ensemble.

visit Vidor’s Texas Maze of Terror. Considered one of the spookiest haunted
attractions in the area, the Maze of Terror is not recommended for young children.

On Oct. 12 and 13, the Chappell Hill Scarecrow Festival is
a great small-town fall festival that the entire family will love. Featuring
more than 250 exhibitors, local vendors and food, and much more, this charming
festival should be on every Texan’s calendar.
For adults 21 years of age and older, the Art Museum of
Southeastern Texas will host the 4th annual Boos and Brews Monster Mash. This costume-friendly
event will feature live music, seasonal beers, and festive fall foods.
